Motor Protection Circuit Breakers: A Procurement Checklist

Specify motor protection breakers with the correct setting range, trip function, starter combination and accessory requirements.

Define the motor starter

A motor protection circuit breaker belongs to a motor circuit that may also include a contactor, overload relay and control devices. Product names vary, and some devices provide different combinations of protection. Read the actual trip functions rather than assuming that every motor circuit breaker includes the same overload behavior.

Collect nameplate and starting information

Send motor rated current, voltage, frequency, power, duty and starting method. The setting range must be suitable for the intended motor and engineering design. Do not select a device solely from a kW value without the associated voltage and duty. High starting current and long acceleration times must be considered by the designer.

Verify the tested combination

A breaker and contactor from the same brand do not automatically form a verified combination. Request the manufacturer coordination information for the exact references and fault level. For US machinery, identify the required application and approvals of the assembled starter. Component certificates alone do not establish the rating of the finished panel.

Include the installation accessories

List door handles, shafts, auxiliary and alarm contacts, undervoltage releases and connection kits. State the enclosure and mounting arrangement. When replacing equipment, include photographs of terminals and installed links so the quotation accounts for the hardware that makes the assembly fit.

What to include in your RFQ

Provide the exact reference or full motor data, quantity, existing starter references, required documents and destination. Mark alternatives as subject to engineering approval. AurFort quotations should be checked against the project bill of materials before ordering.

Explore catalog references

Examples for product research; suitability and availability must be confirmed for your project.

Manufacturer references

These AI-assisted purchasing guides use manufacturer references and catalog data. They are not installation instructions or a substitute for project-specific engineering approval.
