Control Relays, Overload Relays and Monitoring Relays

Understand relay functions and prepare an RFQ with the right supply voltage, contact arrangement, setting range and socket.

Start with the relay function

Control relays, thermal or electronic overload relays, timing relays and monitoring relays perform different tasks. The word relay is therefore only a starting point for procurement. Identify whether the device switches a signal, monitors a condition or initiates a motor-protection response.

Control and interface relays

For a control relay, record the coil or supply voltage, AC/DC type, contact arrangement and load characteristics. Include the socket reference, retention clip and suppression accessory where needed. A relay contact rating must be checked for the actual type of load rather than treated as a universal switching capacity.

Motor overload relays

An overload relay is selected with the motor data and starter arrangement. Confirm the adjustable current range, trip class, reset method and compatible contactor mounting. Its presence does not remove the need to verify short-circuit protection. A replacement with a similar setting range may still have different terminals or reset behavior.

Monitoring and timing functions

For phase, voltage or current monitoring, specify the measured system and desired response. For a timing relay, include the timing function and operating range. Document what the output should do when power fails or an abnormal condition occurs; product labels alone may not communicate the required logic.

Avoid incomplete replacements

Submit the complete reference, socket details, wiring diagram if available, quantity and delivery destination. Indicate whether a relay is part of a safety-related function. Such an application requires the specified safety design and components rather than a generic control-relay substitution.
